What happens during a newborn photo session is one of the questions I hear most from first-time parents. If this is your first newborn session, it’s completely normal to have questions. You may even wonder what those two to four hours actually look like.

As both a photographer and a mom, I know how overwhelming those first few weeks can feel. That’s why I want to walk you through the experience step by step. Knowing what to expect helps you arrive feeling relaxed and confident. Then you can simply enjoy time with your new baby.

Arriving and Settling In

The first 20 to 30 minutes are all about getting comfortable.

When you arrive at my Charlottesville studio, there’s no pressure to jump right into photos. We’ll settle in at your baby’s pace and give them time to get comfortable in the studio.

If your little one needs feeding, we’ll start there. I always encourage parents to feed their baby whenever needed. A full, sleepy baby often settles into the session more easily.

Meanwhile, I’ll adjust the temperature and lighting to create a warm, cozy space for your baby. I also prepare the studio with carefully chosen wraps, blankets, bonnets, and simple props. You don’t have to bring anything extra.

What Happens During a Newborn Photo Session: We Follow Your Baby’s Pace

Every newborn session is a little different because every baby is different.

Most sessions last between 2 and 4 hours. If you’re including parents and siblings, you’ll usually be closer to the four-hour mark. That extra time gives us plenty of room to capture beautiful family portraits without feeling rushed.

Throughout the session, I work at your baby’s pace, not the clock. Some babies fall asleep as soon as they arrive and stay sleepy the entire session. Others need a few extra nursing or bottle breaks, diaper changes, or cuddles before they’re ready for the next pose.

That’s completely normal.

I never rush a newborn session because those quiet moments are part of the experience. Taking breaks whenever your baby needs them keeps everyone relaxed and comfortable. That often leads to the sweetest, most natural portraits.

From Baby Portraits to Family Moments

Most sessions begin with your baby’s individual portraits while they’re nice and sleepy.

This is when we capture the tiny details you’ll never want to forget. Little fingers, curled-up toes, sleepy expressions, and delicate eyelashes all tell your baby’s story.

Once we’ve finished your baby’s solo portraits, we’ll move into family photographs.

We’ll photograph parents together with the baby first, then each parent individually. If siblings are joining us, we’ll create sibling portraits before capturing everyone together as a family.

If you’d like to change outfits for family portraits, we’ll build that into the session. I recommend keeping clothing simple with soft, neutral colors so the focus stays on your family’s connection.

What Happens After Your Newborn Photo Session

Once we’ve captured everything we need, your session is complete.

Afterward, I’ll carefully curate your gallery and prepare your images for your ordering appointment.

Together, we’ll choose your favorite portraits and decide how you’d like to enjoy them in your home. You might choose framed wall art, a custom heirloom album, or a collection of prints. I’ll guide you through every option
