When Should I Book My Newborn Photos?
I get this question all the time. Usually from a mom who’s halfway through pregnancy, staring at her to-do list, thinking,
“Surely this is a future me problem.” Which is totally fair. Also, future you will be tired so let’s help her out.
Here’s the honest answer: Earlier than you think.
Most families book their newborn photos sometime in the second trimester. Around that “okay this is actually happening” stage of pregnancy. Because once the baby is here, your brain will be full of feeding times, nap math, and wondering if it’s normal to cry over spilled coffee. (It is.)
“But I’m Still Pregnant… Isn’t This Too Early?”
Nope. This is actually the sweet spot. Newborn sessions happen when babies are about one to three weeks old. That’s when they’re still super sleepy, curly, and brand new. And because babies don’t arrive on a schedule (rude), I only take a limited number of newborns each month. We plan around due dates, not exact days. So when you book, you’re really just saving a place on the calendar for future you. And she will be very grateful.
“What If My Baby Comes Early… Or Late?”
Then we adjust. That’s it. That’s the answer. You email me when your baby arrives. We shuffle things around. We make it work. This might be your first curveball as a parent, but it won’t be your last. You don’t need to stress about it now.
What Happens If You Wait Until After the Baby Is Born?
Here’s the part I say gently… but honestly. Sometimes there just isn’t space. Newborn photographers (especially ones who focus on client experience and don’t overbook) can’t squeeze in unlimited sessions. And I never want a family to feel rushed or stressed during something that should feel calm. Booking early protects your spot. And your sanity.
This isn’t just another thing on your pregnancy list. It’s about not missing a season that goes by faster than anyone warns you.
Your baby will never be this small again.
Not tomorrow.
Not next week.
Not even by the time you finish this post.
And when the fog lifts later, these photos are often what help moms remember what it actually felt like in those first days.
If you’re pregnant and looking for a Charlottesville newborn photographer, and you’ve even thought about newborn photos, that’s your sign.
You don’t need to know what you want yet.
You don’t need to plan outfits or props or poses.
You just need to raise your hand and say,
“I don’t want to miss this.”
I’ll take it from there. 🤍
